Best for construction
Smartsheet is the general PM tool the AEC world actually adopts, because it thinks in the grid-plus-Gantt schedules a builder already keeps, with real dependencies and critical path. It has a native Procore connector and QuickBooks integration, so schedule and cost data move into the construction stack instead of stranding in a silo, and the mobile app plus dynamic forms handle daily logs and RFIs from the field. For coordination and scheduling short of full GC operations, it’s the pick.
monday.com brings dependency-aware Gantt, a strong mobile app and construction-oriented templates, plus QuickBooks and a broad integration directory to wire into the rest of your tools. Its Procore tie is connector-based rather than as native as Smartsheet’s, so confirm the integration depth you need. Excellent when a visual, approachable board matters to crews who won’t adopt a spreadsheet.
ClickUp packs Gantt with dependencies, forms, automation and a capable mobile app at an aggressive price, so a builder gets a lot of capability per seat. The gap is the construction stack — there’s no native Procore connector, so jobsite-platform links lean on the API or Zapier. Strong value for a contractor running coordination in one tool, weaker if deep Procore integration is non-negotiable.
Wrike offers solid critical-path scheduling, request forms for RFIs and approvals, resource management and a mobile app, which suits a bigger contractor coordinating many people. Its construction-stack integrations are connector-based and the Business tier carries a five-seat minimum, so it’s priced for teams, not a two-person outfit. A capable mid-market choice that trails Smartsheet on native construction fit.
Asana is superb for the office side of a build — RFIs as tasks, submittals, marketing-style coordination — and Timeline gives a usable Gantt. But dependency and critical-path handling are lighter than the schedulers above, and there’s no native construction-stack integration, so it stalls as a true field schedule. Keep it for back-office coordination; reach for a real scheduler for the build itself.
Jira is a software-development tracker, and dropping a construction schedule into it is forcing the wrong tool: critical-path Gantt needs a plugin, the model is sprints and issues rather than trades and dependencies, and there’s no construction-stack integration. A builder who picks it for the low seat price inherits a setup fight and a tool that never speaks Procore. Wrong shape for the jobsite — full stop.
Can a general project management tool run a construction project?
For scheduling and coordination, yes; for full general-contractor operations, no. Tools like Smartsheet and monday.com handle the critical-path schedule, daily logs, RFIs and field coordination well, and integrate into the construction stack. But submittals, drawing management, prime contracts and pay applications belong to a true construction platform like Procore — which is priced as an enterprise system, often $15k–$80k a year on a volume model. Use a general PM tool for the schedule; don’t expect it to replace the GC platform.

What’s the wrong-fit trap for construction?
Picking a tool built for another job because the price or the interface is appealing — Jira for the cheap seat, Trello or Asana for the familiar board. None has true critical-path scheduling or a construction-stack integration, so the schedule never behaves like a construction schedule and the data never reaches Procore or QuickBooks. Weight the Gantt and the integrations; if a tool can’t cascade a slipped task and can’t talk to your jobsite platform, it’s the wrong tool no matter how low the seat price.
