Twilio
A developer grade messaging API and CPaaS, endlessly flexible but built for builders, not marketers.
Twilio is the infrastructure a lot of other texting tools are built on. As a Programmable Messaging API it offers near unlimited flexibility, low per message rates, global reach and strong deliverability, and it scales from a prototype to millions of messages. The catch for marketers is that Twilio is a developer platform, not a campaign tool: there is no out of the box campaign builder, list manager or segmentation interface, so you or a developer assemble the marketing layer yourself or bolt on Twilio Engage. Pricing is pure pay as you go: a couple of dollars per number a month, a fraction of a cent per message, plus US carrier fees, which is excellent value at scale and overkill for a simple list.

In its favour
Held against it
Powerful infrastructure, not a marketing app.
Twilio scores at the top on value, deliverability and flexibility, and at the bottom on ease for a marketer, because it is an API rather than a campaign tool. The blended score reflects that split.
Scored against the same five weighted criteria we use across SMS marketing. See the rubric →
a team with developer resources that wants to build a custom messaging stack on low cost, reliable infrastructure.
a marketer who wants a ready made campaign builder, list management and segmentation out of the box.
